Finding Balance When Every Part of Your Life Needs You
Sometimes I feel like I have several full-time jobs, and every one of them needs equal parts of me. My family needs attention, my home needs care, and my business needs constant growth, relevance, and new energy. Always being mindful of my health (mind, body, and spirit) is ongoing. I’m grateful for all of it, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to manage.
Recovery is the foundation for everything else. That’s where my connection to my higher power is, my service to others, and my daily reprieve from the disease of addiction. It needs my attention because it supports the way I show up in every other part of my life. When I’m deciding where my time goes, I have to remember what makes this life possible in the first place.
As an Orlando life coach, I have conversations about balance with clients, and I’m practicing it in my own life, too. Having tools doesn’t mean I never feel overwhelmed. I still have days when I’m thinking about work while I’m with my family or looking around my house wondering when I’m going to get to everything. Those are usually signs that I need to look at what I’ve committed to and make some adjustments or just get to Sunday nap (yeah we schedule those).
For me, what works is a calendar and being intentional with my time. I need to see what’s coming, what needs attention, and what I can realistically fit into my week. Time blocking helps because my business could take up every available minute if I let it. There is always something to create, improve, learn, or follow up on. Having time set aside helps me focus and gives me a stopping point so I can give my attention to something else.
Sometimes I also look for ways to overlap. I’m writing this on the treadmill while getting my daily steps in, so I’m hitting two goals at once. My business is getting attention, and I’m taking care of my health. Other things need my full attention, like being present with my family, putting my phone away or sitting with a client. I try to notice where combining things works and where I need to focus on one thing at a time.
I also need a village, and that means actually asking for support when I need it. Sometimes I want to believe I can handle everything, but I know how much better life works when I communicate what I need. That might be help at home, someone to talk something through with, or admitting that I’ve put too much on my plate. I can take responsibility for my life and still need people.
Being flexible matters just as much as having a plan. Things change, my family needs me, something runs over, or I need more rest than I expected. I have to be willing to move things around and make a decision based on what’s happening. A packed calendar doesn’t leave much room for being human, so I need to consider that when I’m making it.
And sometimes I have to take it on the chin. I get it wrong, overcommit, or don’t give something the attention it deserves. I need to own that, have the conversation if one is needed, and figure out what I can do differently. I’m going to have days when I fall short. How I respond affects whether I keep repeating the same problem.
Consistency is what helps me keep coming back. The regular attention I give to my recovery, relationships, health, and work adds up. I’m learning that all of these things can be priorities without getting an equal amount of time every single day. Some days require more from me in one area, but I need to stay aware of what I’m continually pushing aside.
I want to grow my business, be present with my family, care for my home, challenge myself physically, and stay connected spiritually. That takes effort and some honest choices about what I have room for. I can love everything I’m doing and still need to slow down, ask for help, or let something wait.
